VisitMalta Incentives & Meetings (VMIM) has confirmed its participation at IMEX Frankfurt 2026, aligning with this year’s IMEX talking point, Design Matters. For Malta, this theme reflects the islands’ long-standing design story, shaped across thousands of years and continuing to influence how people gather today.
Malta’s architectural landscape spans prehistoric ingenuity, medieval planning, and the Baroque expressions introduced by the Knights of St. John. Sites such as the Ġgantija temples, the fortified city of Mdina, and Valletta’s Renaissance-Baroque urban fabric illustrate how design has historically served both practical and human-centred purposes.
Situated at the crossroads of the Mediterranean, Malta has brought people together for centuries. Traders, travellers and cultures have long converged on the islands, establishing a natural meeting point that continues to support Malta’s role as a destination for international meetings and incentive travel.
This heritage is particularly relevant for today’s meetings and incentives sector. Historic venues such as courtyards, palaces, museums, forts and coastal locations overlooking the sea, provide distinctive settings for events. Many of these spaces have been carefully adapted to host conferences and gatherings, combining modern infrastructure with the authenticity of their original design. One example is the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Malta’s flagship venue, transformed from a 16th-century hospital into a theatre and conference facility.
Malta’s history as a meeting point also informs the design of programmes across Malta and Gozo. Incentive itineraries are often structured to connect venues with local experiences. Activities may include heritage treasure hunts through historic streets, canoeing along the coastline, farm-to-fork culinary experiences in rural settings, and workshops focused on traditional crafts and local culture. These programmes are designed to encourage engagement, provide authentic interactions with the destination, and build motivation among participants while creating a lasting impact.
In Malta, design extends beyond the physical setting to include how programmes and venues work together to support events. The islands offer planners practical options for creating structured programmes that support collaboration and interaction.
