Sofitel New York is dialling up the glamour, revealing a property-wide refurbishment with French Art Deco stylings. All 346 rooms and 52 suites take on a fresh neutral palette – the work of design firm HBA San Francisco. As one of only three New York City properties attached to the Accor Live Limitless (ALL) loyalty programme, Sofitel New York is significant for those doing business in Midtown Manhattan, or visiting Times Square just two blocks away.
The property’s swish new look gives a nod to the light-and-dark design style of the 1930s. Taking a leaf from the pages of designers Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann and Eileen Gray, Sofitel New York’s theme balances lighter ivory and cream tones against high-gloss, lacquered black. To soften internal aesthetics, gentle curves complement upgraded lighting. Some suites even claim “theatrical lighting” to suit the property’s place among the theatres of West 44th Street. Most rooms afford city vistas, with selected suites artfully framed around terraces and balconies. The best of these come with views of the Chrysler Building or the Empire State Building.Guests with ALL Silver status and higher can redeem their gratis drink vouchers at Social 45, a new bar and bistro which also serves French classics and New-York-inspired delights. Travellers should beware of the price tag – a grilled cheese sandwich with caviar will set you back USD$98, plus 20% gratuity, plus tax.
Sofitel’s Broader Brand Revamp
The overdue facelift at Sofitel New York plays into a broader revitalisation strategy for the global brand. Since 2024, the CEO of Sofitel, Sofitel Legend, MGallery and Emblems, Maud Bailly, has been meeting with every owner to discuss each hotel’s position in the brand going forward. In late 2024, Bailly shared that this includes “trying to convince (hotel owners) to renovate or rebrand, or to de-flag.” Mindful that guest experience can vary greatly from one Sofitel to the next, it’s part of a strategy to keep Sofitel hotels true luxury destinations.“Today, nearly 30% of Sofitel hotels worldwide are being revitalised,” Bailly shares in light of the New York refurbishment. That’s “a powerful reflection of our commitment to ensuring consistency and excellence across our entire network.”The unveiling follows upgrades to many of the brand’s iconic properties, stretching from Sofitel Sydney Wentworth to Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam, Sofitel Bangkok Sukhumvit, Sofitel Montreal Golden Mile and Sofitel Philadelphia, among others.Earlier this year the brand also unveiled a partnership with French designer Cordelia de Castellane for a new uniform collection, set to be rolled out across all of its hotels in 2026.
